Cold Card
The Cold Card is one of the most respected Bitcoin hardware wallets on the market. Coinkite brings it to us, and it is truly a badass device. If you are looking to take your Bitcoin journey more seriously in regards to privacy and security, then Cold Card is an excellent choice. I would even go as far as to say it is the top choice in the crypto space.
The reason I say that is that I know I am in good hands with Coinkite. They are cypherpunks! But, take what I say with a grain of salt because Coinkite [and the crypto community] say “Don’t Trust – Verify!”. What does this mean, though? It means to DYOR [Do Your Own Research] and to verify everything and trust no one. Don’t trust the companies behind your devices or randos on the internet. Do things diligently with a fine-tooth comb.
If you are even new to Bitcoin and the crypto space, the Cold Card is an excellent entry point. I have learned that the best way to learn something is through direct experience. You can read and talk to AI all you want, but until it’s your actual hands, brain, and self using the device, you won’t fully grasp concepts.
Don’t let the Cold Card intimidate you either. A Bitcoin beginner can use it up to the Bitcoin Paranoid. They have docs that will walk you through ;).
They also have 2 models – the Q and MK4. There are older models of the MK [1-3] as well, but not for sale via Coinkite.
I won’t take you through a walkthrough here since they already do a wonderful job. Instead, I’ll highlight the features of each device.
MK4
The MK4 is off by default. It is a security feature, not a flaw. The fact that it is a Bitcoin-only device is a feature, too. Even if you’re not technically a Bitcoin maximalist, having a Bitcoin-only device is way more secure because it is just simple and pure. It is sound money without any alt or shitcoins to deal with.
The cool thing about the Coldcards is that they force you (in a good way) to take your Bitcoin seriously.
Specs:
- 128×64 pixel OLED screen
- Numeric Keypad
- Sliding Cover
- NFC-V Compatible
- Ultrasecure
- USB-C Connector
- AirGap SneakerNET
- NFC Tap
- Virtual Disk
Key Storage
Some hardware wallets just use and trust a main microprocessor for things like key storage. The Coldcard Mk4 uses 2 Secure Elements (Microchip’s ATECC608 and Maxim’s DS28C36B) to store the critical master secret: the 24-word seed phrase for your BIP39 wallet.
Genuine vs Caution Lights
Beware of the Evil Maids!
Imagine you’re staying in a hotel, and you leave your laptop or hardware wallet in your room. An attacker (the “evil maid”) comes in while you’re gone—like a real maid might—and tampers with your device without your knowledge.
In the crypto world, this would mean things like:
- Installing malware or a backdoor into your hardware wallet or computer
- Swapping your device with a nearly identical but compromised one
- Logging keystrokes or passphrase entries
- Altering the firmware so that your private keys or PINs are leaked later
Coldcards can help mitigate these attacks by:
- Tamper-evident bags and seals: So if someone tries to open or swap your device, you’ll know
- Power-on verifications like the “brick me” PIN, which destroys the device if the wrong PIN is entered
- Secure elements and offline-only operation via microSD (air-gapped), reducing exposure to malicious software
- Dice roll entropy for seed generation—letting you verify your seed’s randomness
- Duress PINs that can display decoy wallets if coerced
Anti-Phishing Words
Just like with email, you could be phished with a hardware wallet. The MK4 rectifies this by the use of anti-phishing words. The purpose is to ensure you won’t be tricked by a compromised or fake device.
When setting up your MK4, you’ll choose a PIN that’s split into 2 parts:
- Prefix
- Suffix
After entering the prefix, the device displays two random-looking words (your “anti-phishing words”) before prompting you for the suffix. These words are unique to your PIN and device. If they ever change unexpectedly, it may indicate tampering or a clone attempting to steal your PIN.
Physical Security
Unfortunately, in the crypto space, some of us may endure real physical fight or flight threats. Thankfully, the Coldcard devices have these scenarios in mind—this includes things like physical tampering and forensic-level attacks.
👽 Probe attacks involve bypassing normal software defenses and going straight to the hardware itself. The goal of a probe attacker is to extract secrets directly from memory, flash chips, or secure elements (SE).
Probing involves things like:
- Attaching micro-wires or needles to the circuit board to monitor electrical signals
- Measuring voltage fluctuations to infer what’s happening inside the secure element
- Using techniques like laser fault injection or side-channel attacks to bypass protections
The MK4 is designed to resist probing!
First off, the case is clear as a security feature. This way, you will be able to visibly see if there are any hidden implants during shipping or while unattended. There are no mystery guts. If someone tries to insert a spying chip, you’ll see it.
Other anti-probing MK4 features include:
- Strategic trace layout and chip placement
- Tight integration between components
The Coldcard MK4 doesn’t have a factory reset or backdoor on purpose! This is why it is so important to know and write down your PIN. If you lose your PIN, your wallet will be permanently bricked! The only thing you could do at that point is to recycle it as e-waste.
Why?
The intentionality of this is so that you can’t reset it and no one else can either—not hackers, not law enforcement, not Coinkite themselves. That’s true self-custody.
🔫 The MK4 also sports “SHOOT THESE” labels! Whether you are in a dire situation or ensuring the device never leaks a secret, you know exactly where to aim.
✈️ Air-Gapped
Many hardware wallets available are exploited through compromised USB connections or infected computers.
Your Coldcard never needs to be inserted into a computer via USB. Instead, just use a USB block or portable battery pack. All sensitive data communication can be done through microSD cards.
You can do everything:
- Choose and confirm your PIN
- Learn your anti-phishing words
- Create duress and brick-me PINs if desired
- Create a brand-new 24-word seed using the Coldcard’s built-in true random number generator (TRNG)
- Import your existing seed phrase
Including…
- Receive a PSBT (Partially Signed Bitcoin Transaction) file on a microSD card
- Sign it using Coldcard
- Export the signed transaction back to the card
- Broadcast it on a separate internet-connected device
🎲 If you don’t trust Coldcard’s TRNG (True Random Number Generator), generate entropy with physical dice rolls for maximum verifiability.
🧠 What is Entropy?
In the context of Bitcoin and cryptography, entropy simply means randomness—the unpredictability used to generate secure private keys.
Think of entropy as the raw ingredient for creating a wallet’s seed phrase. The more random the entropy, the more secure the wallet.
PSBT?
PSBT stands for Partially Signed Bitcoin Transactions. This way, your Bitcoin transactions remain fully air-gapped, whatever stage you’re at from construction, passing around, or signing. Your private keys never need to be exposed.
The process goes something like:
- Create a transaction on a separate device (e.g., Sparrow Wallet on your laptop)
- Save it to a microSD card
- Insert the card into your Coldcard to sign the transaction offline
- Export the signed file back to your laptop and broadcast it to the network
Q
The Coldcard Q can be seen as the big sibling to the MK4. A Swiss Bank Account in your pocket.
The Q stands for the keyboard, as in QWERTY. Entering passphrases, navigating menus, and verifying details just got a whole lot more comfortable.
Let’s get a breakdown of what sets the Q apart…
✨ What Sets the Coldcard Q Apart

Opendime

An Opendime is, in essence, a physical bitcoin! It is akin to handing someone cash IRL. Another way to think of it is a Bitcoin bearer bond. Whoever physically holds the Opendime owns the Bitcoin stored on it.
Aesthetically, it looks like a barebones thumb drive. Trust is minimized yet cryptographically secure.
You can also treat it like a Bitcoin piggy bank. Whenever you want to spend the Bitcoin, you will need to “unseal” it to reveal the private key.
Here’s how it works:
- Plug it in — it shows a QR code and Bitcoin address.
- Load it — send BTC to that address.
- Verify — check the balance online or offline.
- Transfer — give the Opendime to someone else.
- Spend — the recipient can either:
- Use it as-is (trusting it hasn’t been unsealed)
- Break the seal to extract the private key and sweep the funds
Use cases include gifts, tipping, cold storage, and passing BTC privately.
Satscard
The Satscard takes the Opendime to the next level. It is like a modern gift card. It uses NFC instead of USB. Rather than just having 1 private key, you can store up to 10 on the Satscard.
To get it up and running…
- Tap the card on your phone (with an app like Nunchuk).
- Deposit BTC to the address
- Give it to someone or keep it yourself!
- The recipient can tap and verify the balance.
- Keep it sealed (like a bearer bond)
- Unseal it by generating a new deposit slot and revealing the private key to sweep the funds
- Once a slot is used (i.e., “spent”), it’s no longer trustworthy.
Win With Bitcoin Self-Sovereignty
Each one of Coinkite’s devices brings you a step closer to Bitcoin self-sovereignty. No matter what you choose, you will protect and value your Bitcoin that much more.
